Hedge Laying Workshop

On Wednesday 28th January, plotholders were invited to learn the ancient art of hedge laying at the allotments. The hedge laying took place at the Church Grove end of the hedge we have planted along the south side of the allotments parallel to The Avenue

Organised by Andrew Saunders, the work was carried out by a group from The Conservation Volunteers plus plotholders who wanted to help and learn the craft.

Hedge laying involves cutting upright stems most of the way through and tying them near horizontally to hazel stakes. The result is a much thicker and neater hedge. While the theory is simple, it takes practice to know how deeply to cut and the angle at which the stems (or pleachers) should be tied. It will be very useful for the allotments to have a number of plotholders with this experience.
