    'Non-social' Christmas event

Our ‘non-social’ event, organised by Hilary got off to a wet set-up start on the morning of Sunday 13th December, but the rain held off for the duration! A good crowd appeared and mulled wine, jams, chutneys, cakes, mistletoe, spiced herbs and a strange keffir substance flew off the stalls!

    Bird Walk 01.12.19

A keen group of bird spotters assembled at the entrance gates for an early 8.00am bird spotting walk, led by Jon Tarlton.

Jon took us round the perimeter roads of the RPA site, identifying and providing a wealth of information about the birds flying over and on plots and site edges. We learned that there are four sorts of pigeon – collared doves, stock doves and wood pigeons in addition to our much-maligned feral pigeons – WW2 heroes!

One of the two kestrels now seen regularly made an appearance, and the high spot was a good view of a reed bunting in amongst undergrowth and two greenfinches foraging on bramble for late fruit – they haven’t been seen on site for a while!

We logged 22 different birds, not bad for an hour’s walk round. It was a great way to start the day, thanks to Jon and his ornithological knowledge and interest.

Watch this space for Jon’s next birdwalk. We’ll announce the date for the first 2020 walk early in the new year. All welcome to see what New Year birds we can spot!
